Yangin, Banu – Hacettepe University Journal of Education, 2009
The aim of this study is to explore the possible relationships between the readiness and reading and writing performances of a group of children who are first graders in an elementary school in Turkey. The states of children in terms of school readiness, sound-letter relationships, and phonemic awareness were determined individually during the…

Silvestro, John R. – 1978
The efficacy of second dentition, the number of erupted teeth, as an index in assessing school readiness was examined. A series of cognitive, achievement, and social-emotional instruments were administered to a group of 41 first- and 43 second-grade children. The tests used in this study were: Devereux Elementary School Behavior Rating Scale,…

Dependents Schools (DOD), Washington, DC. – 1984
As part of the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) annual assessment of achievement, the Metropolitan Readiness Tests (MRT) were administered to approximately 14,768 first-grade pupils in the fall of 1983. The mean scaled scores of the DoDDS first graders clustered around the national mean of 150. The DoDDS mean scores in the various…

Changes Over an Eight- and a Nine-Year Period in the Readiness Level of Entering First-Grade Pupils.
Mitchell, Blythe C. – 1974
Data from national entering first-grade populations of 1964 (N=12,225) and of 1972/1973 (N=4275/6653) show an 11-point increase in median raw score on the 102-item Metropolitan Readiness Tests. The increase is shown to be greater at the lower than at the higher ranges of the score scale, with the first quartile increasing by 13 points, the third…

Watkins, Ernest O.; Wiebe, Michael J. – Psychology in the Schools, 1984
Investigated the factor composition of the Metropolitan Readiness Test, using first-grade subjects (N=1,241). A total battery score was supported, as well as a second factor believed to represent a language dimension of the test. None of the MRT's other content areas or a distinct prereading measure were identified. (Author/JAC)

Reynolds, Cecil R. – Contemporary Educational Psychology, 1979
The responses of 322 beginning first graders to the six subtests of the Metropolitan Readiness Test were factor analyzed. A single General Readiness factor appeared to best describe the instrument. Implications for use of the Metropolitan Readiness Test are briefly discussed. (Author)

Dappen, Leon; Reynolds, Cecil R. – Psychology in the Schools, 1981
The 1976 Metropolitan Readiness Test was factor analyzed from responses of (N=408) beginning first graders. Results indicated a single general readiness factor, consistent with prior research, best described the battery of eight subtests. This factor was invariant across sex when separate analyses for males and females were compared. (Author)

Willis, Sherry L. – 1973
The purpose of the study was to explore the formation of teachers' expectations of students' academic performance. First-grade teachers were interviewed or asked to respond to questionnaires concerning their pupils, and ranked their students on expected academic performance at three periods in the school year. Teachers rankings of expected…

Reynolds, Cecil R. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1979
The six subtests comprising the Metropolitan Readiness Tests were factor analyzed separately for White females, White males, Black females, and Black males. A single factor best described the structure of the test for each group. The factor structure was essentially invariant with regard to race and sex variables. (Author/CTM)

Nagle, Richard J. – Educational and Psychological Measurement, 1979
A sample of 176 first-grade children was tested on the Metropolitan Readiness Tests, 1976 Edition (MRT), during the initial month of school and was retested eight months later on the Stanford Achievement Test. Results demonstrated substantial validity of the MRT for predicting first-grade achievement. (Author/CTM)

Scott-Jones, Diane – Journal of Negro Education, 1987
Both high- and low-readiness low-income Black first graders may play an active role in their own learning. The greatest amount of didactic interactions occurred in the homes of the low-readiness children; however, their mothers appeared not to possess the skills they were trying to teach their children.
