Intended for reading teachers, this resource book provides a variety of practical suggestions and materials for motivating students to read. Chapter one deals with removing roadblocks to reading, including such things as low expectations, a poor self-concept, lack of self-control, lack of flexibility, and lack of time and of interest. Chapter two deals with reading diagnosis. It contains a definition and discussion of diagnosis; an informal reading inventory; information about efficient record keeping; physical screening checklists; and practical teaching suggestions for the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learner. Chapter three discusses the sight, phonics, and multisensory methods of teaching reading as well as the language experience, linguistic, and shared book experience approaches. Chapter four covers vocabulary development, clues for teaching vocabulary, sight vocabulary, word identification skills, word meanings, and language development. Chapter five focuses on factors influencing comprehension and how to teach it, while chapter six deals with teaching students to read content area text books and discusses strategies for helping students with the text and for motivating them.
