Changes in men's and women's societal roles and in their personality characteristics might be expected to lead to corresponding changes in the personal relations between sexes. Male (N=140) and female (N=95) college students, classified as sex-typed, cross-sex-typed, androgynous, or undifferentiated on the basis of their Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) scores, rated their ideal dating partners/potential spouses on the BSRI items. Predictions that androgynous individuals would describe similarly androgynous ideals while sex-typed individuals would prefer complementarily sex-typed ideals were not confirmed. All subjects described ideals with a relative complementarity in sex-typing: the male more masculine than his partner, the female more feminine than hers. Results suggest that societal norms and stereotypes must be considered in addition to individual differences in psychological set-typing in predicting individual's hetereosexual attraction patterns, and that psychological androgyny does not have as much generality regarding individuals' life styles as has been attributed to it.
