Mindfulness Training: An Evaluation of Effects on Pre-Practicum Student Anxiety and Counseling Self-Efficacy
Blaine C. Reilly
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Idaho State University
This study investigated the effects of mindfulness training provided to four beginning Master's-level counseling students. A multiple baseline design across participants was used to measure the effects that a mindfulness training program had on student anxiety and counseling self-efficacy (CSE). The study utilized Biopac technology in recording participants' heart rate and skin conductance as they viewed practice counseling sessions. Additionally, the Beck's Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the Counseling Self Efficacy (COSE) instruments were included with the physiological data. In analyzing the effects of the mindfulness training program, visual analysis of the participants' physiological responses were used along with inferential statistics inclusive of a repeated measures ANOVA and Pearson r. Due to the variability of the graphed data and lack of data stability between participants' baseline and treatment phases, the null hypotheses were accepted. Implications for further research are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC. Further reproduction is prohibited without permission.
