A variety of approaches to student outcomes in higher education are described and an essay on the topic is included in this bulletin. In the essay, "The Campus as a Learning Environment," Douglas Heath suggests the significance of such projects for liberal education in the broadest sense. The following programs are discussed: Institutional Program Evaluation and Assessment system at Brookdale Community College, New Jersey; Competency Learning Project at Our Lady of the Lake University, Texas; Departmental Curricular Review Based on Student Outcomes project at the State University of New York at Geneseo; Writing Competency Exam project at Johnson State College, Vermont; the Self-Assessment Program at State University of New York at Plattsburgh; Competency-Based General Education Project at Piedmont Technical College, South Carolina; and five assessment services programs. The following assessment services are described: the College Outcomes Measures Project of the American College Testing Program; the Fifty College Project of the Council for the Advancement of Experiential Learning; the Undergraduate Assessment Program of the Educational Testing Service; the Comprehensive Cognitive Assessment Battery of McBer and Company; and the Outcomes Structure of National Center for Higher Education Management Systems.
