Aung Kyi was educated at St John Diocesan School, Rangoon, and graduated from the Institute of Medicine (II), Rangoon, where he made lifelong friends. Still in Burma, he was granted full GMC registration on 8 November 1976 and was accepted on the overseas medical graduate scheme at Arbroath Infirmary Hospital, Scotland. He moved to the UK in June 1977.
