Originating from Ghana, Nana Gruer (née Ackom-Mensah) trained in Ireland and practised in England and Scotland. After a spell in dermatology, she focused on gastroenterology, becoming a skilled endoscopist. From 1990 her promising career was limited by Behçet’s disease, a rare autoimmune vasculitis, and by the unsympathetic attitude to chronic disability shown by some senior colleagues. Her …
