Benefits of SAML

SAML authentication provides convenient and secure access to your intitution's IEEE Xplore subscription. The benefits include:

  • The password is the same one used for accessing your organization's internal systems
  • Great addition to other authentication methods, providing options to users
  • Provides IEEE Xplore subscription access to offsite users and those using mobile devices
  • Customizable, real-time usage reports
  • Optional Just in Time Provisioning (JIT) integrates personal accounts with institutional access

Security Certificate and Metadata

IEEE has published a new security certificate on 4 February 2025 and metadata which can be downloaded here.

Notes:

  • The previous certificate provided in January 2025 contained issues that required issuing a new revised security certificate to all customers. All (Single Sign On) and Shibboleth federation customers who interact with IEEE Xplore via SAML/Shibboleth will need to integrate the new security certificate linked above.
  • Download both files if your application is ADFS.

SAML Help & Tips

  1. Please confirm that you have imported the newly updated SAML Certificate from our SP metadata URL.
  2. Corporate Customers experiencing access issues are advised to share their updated Certificate with IEEE, if it was recently updated.
  3. For any other access issues observed, please reach out to the online support team along with a browser HAR file to help us investigate.

Downloading a HAR File

  1. In the Chrome browser, open a new browser page. Use the key combination Ctrl+Shift+I OR right-click on the page and select 'Inspect'. This will open Chrome DevTools.

Go to the "Network" tab in DevTools. Enable the 'Preserve log' checkbox.

  2. Navigate to IEEE Xplore (https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/) and sign in as usual. When you see the Shibboleth Authentication failed message, export the HAR file. Click on the 'Export HAR' icon to download the file.
