Abstract:
Large stationary lead storage batteries play an ever increasing role in substation and generating station control systems and in providing the backup energy for emergencies. A definite need exists within the industry for an application guide and testing procedure to provide a common or standard method for selecting, applying, and installing batteries to meet station requirements. However, to provide a guide that can be used for determining the available capacity of the battery (especially for nuclear stations), this document will limit its scope to recommended practice for lead storage battery maintenance, testing. and replacement.
Scope:
This document is limited to providing recommended practices of maintenance. test schedules, and testing procedures that can be used to optimize life and performance from large lead storage batteries. It also provides guidance to determine when batteries should be replaced. There are other test procedures and replacement techniques used within the industry (especially for smaller substation batteries) that are equally as effective but are beyond the scope of this document. Sizing. installation, other battery types, and application are also beyond the scope. This document does not include surveillance and testing of the dc system even though the battery is part of that system.
