Abstract:

Workable methods for protecting wire-line communication circuits entering power stations are presented. This document covers: the electric power station environment; protection apparatus; service types, reliability, service performance objective classifications, and transmission considerations; protection theory and philosophy; protection configurations; installation and inspection; and safety.
Scope:
This document presents recommended engineering design practices for special high-voltage protection systems intended to protect wire-line telecommunication facilities serving electric power stations. The following topics are included in this document: 1) A description of the power station environment, i.e., ground potential rise (GPR), induced voltages, lightning, and switching transients 2) A discussion of special high-voltage protection devices 3) of service types and service performance objectives for power station telecommunication services 4) Special protection theory and philosophy 5) Special protection system design guidelines 6) Personnel safety considerations 7) Grounding Other telecommunication alternatives such as radio and optical fiber systems are excluded from this document
