Abstract:

Withdrawn Standard. Withdrawn Date: Mar 06, 2000. No longer endorsed by the IEEE. A test protocol and the performance criteria to determine the flame propagation tendency of flame-retardant coated cables in a vertical cable tray are covered. This standard applies to single and multiconductor cables. The test consists of exposing coated and uncoated cable samples to a theoretical 20 kW (70 000 Btu/hr) flame ignition source for a 20 min duration. The test facility, test sample requirements, test procedure, and evaluation of results are covered.
Scope:
This standard defines tests that shall be used to indicate adequacy of flame-retardant coatings applied to insulated cables, particularly in cable trays. This standard does not include a test to determine compatibility between the flame-retardant coating and the materials employed in the cable (insulation, jacket, tapes, etc.). This standard does not include a test to determine circuit integrity.
Purpose:
The purpose of this document is to establish tests to provide guidance for demonstrating that flame-retardant coatings applied to insulated cables retard propagation of flame, remain intact during life of the installation, and have an effect on cable ampacity.
