Indian doctors take to streets to demand better security

Nearly 40 000 doctors in Delhi and Mumbai have gone on strike to demand better security in government hospitals throughout India after a spate of attacks on medical professionals. If the government continues to ignore their concerns for improving safety the doctors have threatened to call a nationwide strike.

Last week a 35 year old resident doctor, Rohan Mhamunkar, was brutally assaulted by relatives of an emergency department patient at a civil hospital in Dhule, a city 300 km from Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra. Within days, four more doctors in the state were attacked in separate incidents.
